Who We Are
The Baptiste, Island, and Skeleton Lakes Watershed Management and Lake Stewardship Council (BISL) is a non profit inter-municipal cooperative group. The Summer Villages at Baptiste, Island and Skeleton Lakes have determined over the past 3 years that they have a clear leadership role to play in ensuring the health of their lake environments. Participants agreed to form the Baptiste, Island Skeleton Lakes Watershed Management and Lake Stewardship Council (BISL). BISL includes representation from summer villages, the town of Athabasca, and the County of Athabasca. Collectively this group is working to protect our lakes and ensure that clean, plentiful water and healthy aquatic systems are maintained in our back yards. BISL Vision Maintain a healthy lake and watershed, recognizing the importance of living within the capacity of the natural environment in order to ensure sustainable recreation agricultural, and industrial benefits. BISL Goals 1) Improve water quality to predevelopment conditions by reducing nutrient and other pollutant loads into Baptiste, Island and Skelton Lakes and improving riparian and water course health. 2) Have property owners on the lake front and within the catchment implement best practices to maintain and restore lake and stream health 3) Increase public awareness and engagement in land stewardship activities through increased knowledge and dialogue about the effects of land use and land development on water quality, water quantity and aquatic habitats. |
